What is a zirconia abutment

From time to time, due to a lack of hygiene or an incorrect lifestyle, our patients are faced with problems in the dental system: tooth damage, both single and multiple, loss, development of extensive infectious diseases, etc.

To eliminate such dental defects in dentistry there is a special section of treatment – implantology. Its essence consists in the installation of implants with crowns in the bone tissue of the upper or lower jaws, between which is placed an abutment of zirconium, titanium, or ceramic.

In Ukraine, the price of zirconia abutment is higher than ceramic or titanium abutment because of its exceptional strength and aesthetics but depends on the option of manufacture: standard or individual abutment.

Zirconium is individually manufactured by the laboratory using a scanner, 3D simulation, and milling machine according to the patient’s parameters. This method makes it possible to achieve a perfect fit to the crown and its exact shape, making the price of individual zirconia custom abutments higher than analogs from other materials.

Zirconium is manufactured as a factory standard, because of mass production they are cheaper than individual, used in typical implants, and are suitable for most patients.

Note, Ukraine and Ukrainian patients in different degrees prefer abutments from the listed materials and production methods, as in different cases, the same adapters can be more or less the optimal option for implantation. Note that the crown, which is usually zirconium, is made of the same material as the abutment, with the cost slightly higher than ceramic, but the strength is higher by order.

In addition, this eliminates the risk of translucency from under the gums or through the crown, which is occasionally observed with titanium abutments.

Any implant intervention implies indications and contraindications, as well as the pros and cons of the installation of a particular type of artificial structure. Therefore, to determine which zirconia abutment is better, individual or standard, we offer to see their advantages and disadvantages in comparison.

Which abutment to choose: ceramic or zirconium

The advantages of one or another design are not so much, but it is worth noting some of them, which may affect the final choice before installation:

The aesthetics of zirconium is somewhat lower (the range of color is not so large), while ceramics can be picked up on the shade, indistinguishable from healthy teeth;
The functionality of zirconium is much larger, as they are more durable, that is, can withstand much higher physical stress when chewing food;
There are cost differences that need to be clarified with the attending physician.

In the end, the choice of an abutment depends entirely on the patient: his preferences and financial possibilities, as well as the recommendations of the attending physician.

In some cases, a combined version of the installation is allowed, based on the strength of the structural material: ceramic products on the front part of the jaw, and zirconium on the side chewing.

Types of zirconia custom abutments by design or attachment type

01 Orthopedic consultation and diagnostics

During the initial consultation, the attending orthopedic doctor:

conducts most of the patient’s gums;
studies testimonies and contraindications, if necessary, conduct oral rehabilitation;
makes a treatment plan and chooses the type of abutment that the patient needs, a method of fixation.

The choice of a specific type of product on a zirconium basis depends on which group of teeth to restore:

front teeth or side chewing teeth;
the crown of which should be as aesthetic as possible, especially in the smiling area.

02 Taking casts for the product

If during the planning of treatment, it was decided to use an individual abutment, it is necessary to remove dental impressions.

Orthopedic dentist carries out manipulations:

Inserts a gum shaper in the implant to ensure correct occlusion of the gums around the future restored tooth unit;
After 10-14 days when the gingival region is formed;
Unscrew the shaper, screw transfers, or analogs;
Removes the silicone impression for transfer to the technical lab.

03 Manufacture of individual zirconia abutment

In the dental laboratory technician:

Casts gypsum into gypsum models of teeth;
places them in a scanner, which translates the received data into 3D models.
then with the use of computer programs designs an individual sample of the abutment, and sends it to the milling machine;
where special cutters grind an exact copy of the product from zirconium;
After milling, it is glued to a metal base, which will later be inserted into the implant.
